I think they're aiming for that but the site is terribly broken right now. At least for individual users. I know the agents have a separate interface to manage their things but I haven't tried it, hopefully that one works at least.

"...This is something to strive for also in the MMT business, and we hope it soon will be as easy to digitally hook into the M-Pesa system..."

As regards APIs and plugging in to their systems, they all do have an API, a form of interface between their systems and external ones, they are however not all web based as are the Google and Facebook APIs and are often variants of ISO standards in the banking industry.

What I know is that they are a bit cautious about opening up. The risks involved are huge.

I see a future where Zap / M-Pesa / Obopay might sufficiently serve the "big" payments - utilities, internet bill as they are now, and sort of leave a long tail of payments that without an web API, is impossible to serve...

Well it looks like Vodacom is going to attempt to develop its own hybrid banking infrastructure with a 1000 SMS banking centres. According to The Citizen, http://www.thecitizen.co.tz/newe.php?id=11806

Do you know anything more about this?

It'll be interesting to see whether or not down the road (years probably)if Vodacom will offer other services that traditional banks offer. Money transfers are great but the development of credit or the ability to profit from one's savings is sorely needed, see the DECI scandal.
